Surgery for Heel Spur Relief

Are you suffering from chronic heel spur? Has you doctor advised you to undergo surgery for heel spur relief? Are you anxious about undergoing the surgery? Do you want to know about the surgical procedure and potential side effects it poses? If your answer is yes, then this article is meant for you! This article will enlighten you about the surgery for heel spur relief.

Most of the surgical procedures for heel spur relief are aimed at detaching the plantar fascia from its attachment to the heel bone. To accomplish this task, a small incision is made either on the bottom of the heel or on its side. Once the surgeon has inserted the scalpel blade, he feels for the plantar fascia. Only after he is confident that he has identified it, they cut the ligament free from the heel bone.

In the 1990s, a new procedure, known as Endoscopic Plantar Fascial Release, was developed by Dr. Steven Barrett and Dr. Steven Day in Houston, Texas. In this procedure, a small incision is place on the side of the heel where a small cannula is placed. Then an arthroscopic camera is inserted. The ligament is visualized via the camera and cut using a small surgical blade. General anesthesia is administered on the patient for this surgery. When the surgery has been completed, a gauze dressing is applied and a post operative shoe or cast is placed.

Post surgery, most of the patients are allowed to walk on the foot immediately, however, they need to restrict their activities. After almost a week, the bandage over the incision is removed and the patient is allowed to wear a good supportive shoe. While some doctors prefer to protect the foot with cast and allow their patient to use crutches.

After two weeks the cast is removed and the patient can now bath the foot. Usually it takes 3 weeks for the patient to be able to walk normally with negligible discomfort. Even after the surgery, it is suggested that the patient should wear orthotics. Since each surgeon has his own set of criteria to guide the patient through their surgery based upon their experience, you must strictly adhere to our doctors’ guidelines.

The Endoscopic Plantar Fascial Release surgery has an overall high success rate. However, surgery has some potential complex side effects. Some of these side effects include infection, continued pain as the ligament failed to separate completely, calcaneal neuroma, etc.

Usual Heel Spur Relief Methods

Heel spur  is the formation of the hook shaped outgrowth on your heel bone. This medical condition is generally found in the middle aged men and women. People with health problems like obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis and poor blood circulation are at high risk of developing heel spurs. This medical condition can lead to intense persisting pain in the heel while walking, running or climbing up and down the stairs.

Heel spur can be diagnosed with the help of X-Rays. However, sometimes, doctors also opt for a gait analysis to ascertain the exact causes of this medical condition. If detected at primary stages, you can adopt some traditional taping for heel spur relief . These easy methods can prove to be very effective. Some of these methods are discussed here.

The primary concern is to make sure that the symptoms do not get worse and to control the inflammation. For this purpose, you must take adequate rest and avoid activities for which you have to lay pressure on your feet. To control the inflammation, doctors prescribe certain non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, such as Ibuprofin. However, these medications are recommended to those who do not have diabetes or any vascular problem. To help increase circulation and relieve the pain, pain creams like Neuroeze, BioFreeze and Boswella Cream can also be used. Ice massage and alternate hot and cold bath is also advisable for reducing the inflammation.

Stretching exercises, using nigh splints and shoe inserts for traction of leg muscles in order to stretch the muscle in the back of the leg and massaging the back of the leg can also be very helpful. Padding, heel cushions and silicone heel cups can also be used to treat morning heel spur. They provide adequate support to the heel and prevent any abnormal heel motion.

Heel Spur Orthotics is amongst the best ways to treat heel spurs and related conditions such as plantar fasciitis. Orthotic devices are in general simple pads that can be easily placed into a pair of shoes can be wear throughout the day to treat the uneasiness of heel spurs. Intended to fit most type of shoes, the unique shock absorbing qualities of the gel heel device, jointly with the deep heel cup and rear foot lodge, offer a resolution to negate painful heels whilst restoring the foot to the neutral position.

Wearing appropriate shoe gear is the number one recommendation. It supports you heel in a proper manner. Use of custom orthotics is also recommended for heel spur relief. You can even go for physiotherapy and muscle stimulation. Physiotherapy and muscle stimulation techniques help in relaxing the muscles and lifting the pressure off them. The only equipment you'll need is a pair of cutters to assure a great fit in most shoes. Using Viscolas cushions gets the heel spurs relief.

When these conservation measures fail to relieve the pain, surgery is indicated. Endoscopic plantar fasciotomy surgery, a newer minimal incision surgery, is the most effective and beneficial measures for heel spur relief. One can also choose extracorporeal shock wave therapy for treating the heel spurs. However, it is a very expensive medical procedure.

Some Effective Heel Spur Treatments

Are you having heel spur? Are you looking for an effective heel spur treatment? If your answer is yes, then you have come to the right place! This article will provide you with information on some of the most effective heel spur treatments

Heel spur, a bony outgrowth on the heel bone, can be a very agonizing experience. Characterized by unbearable pain in the heel, heel spur is most common amongst men and women in their 40s. Heel spur pain can be very debilitating and can make it very difficult to even walk. People having heel spur reported that they wake up with sore feet and find it immensely difficult to take first few steps in the morning.

The pain caused by heel spurs needs to be attended to as soon as possible. If left untreated, it can damage the muscle in your feet. The first concern, in treating heel spurs, is to avoid activities that can aggravate the symptoms. Thus, taking proper rest is advised. Heel pain occurs when the bony outgrowth lays pressure on plantar fascia, the muscle attached to the heel bone, leading to its inflammation. Heel spurs can be treated by trying to decrease the associated inflammation on the affected area.

Generally, doctors prescribe anti- inflammatory drugs for this purpose. These drugs are non steroidal. To provide more support to your heel, orthotic devices, such as shoe inserts, cushioned soles and night splints are used. These devices reduce the pressure on the ligament attached to the heel bone. Performing stretches and exercises that are meant to relax and provide heel spur relief

Along with exercising and stretching, applying ice pack on the affected area can also help in providing periodic relief after acute exacerbation of symptoms. In case you are obese, lose weight. Shedding the extra weight will reduce the pressure on your joints and will eventually provide some relief from heel pain.

In case of chronic heel spurs, doctors recommend surgery. However, surgery has not proved to be much effective and can pose some potentially complex side effects. So, if you wish to avoid going under the knife and the other treatments have failed to provide relief, then you are recommended to go for extracorporeal shock wave therapy. It is one of the latest heel spur treatment procedure that has been approved by FDA in 2000.

Various Heel Spur Relief Measures

Heel spurs can be very painful. They can surely damper your life. If you are also suffering from heel spurs and are looking for measures to provide relief from constant excruciating heel pain, then read this article further. This article will advance your knowledge about various heel spur relief measures.

There are plenty of heel spur relief measures that you can follow to get rid of your heel pain. However, the key to the best relief measure is to recognize the cause behind the inflammation and stretching of plantar fascia. Some of the heel spurs relief measures are enlisted below:

People who are obese have high risk of developing heel spurs. As your total body weight is on your feet while you are standing or walking, the pressure on the plantar fascia increases with increase in your weight. This can lead to plantar fascia’s inflammation and can intensify heel pain.

Diathermy Treatment is another relief measure. In this treatment ultrasound device is used to produce waves which produce heat. This heat generated by waves helps in stimulating the blood circulation to reduce the inflammation and soothing the swelling.

One can even take anti inflammatory medication prescribed by the doctor to relieve the pain. However, they can have some potential side effects. Inflamed soft tissue and bone calcifications that receive these high power pulses will heal stronger without damage to the surrounding tissues. Electricity is not send into the body.

One of the most effective and widely followed measures to relieve heel pain is the alternate use of hot and cold gel packs. It reduces the pain by controlling the inflammation. If you wake up with sore feet in the morning, it is the best relief measure for you.

Use of orthotic shoe inserts and night splints can also prove to be very effective. A foam rubber pad placed on the heel of the shoe can help provide adequate support to the heel and can dissipate the shock impact of each step. On the other hand night splints, arch braces and silicone cups help in reducing the tension on the ligament as well as ensure that there is no abnormal heel movement.

In extracorporeal shockwave therapy, a machine is used to bring sound waves to the painful area. Plantar fasciitis is a pain to the tough, fibrous tissue that forms the arch of the foot. It is not recognized exactly how it works, but it is thought that it force stimulate healing of the fascia. Using shockwave therapy well soon gets the heel spur relief.

Exercises and stretches that are designed to relax the tissues on the heel bone can also be very helpful. Doing these exercises and stretches two times each day can ease the pain and lift the pressure off the plantar fascia.

FDA approved extracorporeal shock wave therapy as a measure to treat heel spur. In this therapy focused waves of either high or low energy are exposed on the affected heel. These waves induce micro trauma that initiates the body’s healing mechanism.

Understanding the Heel Spur Symptoms

A calcium growth that occurs around the muscles that connect to the heel bone is called heel spur. It is found to be common amongst people above the age of 40. However, it can also occur in people belonging to other age groups. People who are suffering from arthritis, poor blood circulation and osteoporosis are also prone to this medical condition. A person tends to develop heel spur or calcaneal spur if one is obese, stands, runs or jogs for long hours leading to excessive physical strain on the legs and by wearing uncomfortable shoes for long durations.

X-Ray can help diagnose Calcaneal spur. This anomaly is can be treated. It is absolutely essential to get this medical condition treated on time by following an appropriate procedure as advised by your doctor. But you must also understand heel spur symptoms as this will enable you to identify the problem at initial stages itself and will help the doctor to design the best treatment for your case.

Calcaneal spur can be a very painful experience. Its most characteristic heel spur symptoms is severe foot ache which is almost like a hard piece of wood being jammed in your foot. The pain is so intense that it can immobilize you or at least can make it immensely difficult to walk, run, climb stairs or carry heavy objects.

The heel spur itself is really not causing any pain. The most severe pain from heel spurs occurs after you have been resting. As you relax, regardless of time of day, the nerves and tendons in your body relax as well. The first steps that you take heel-spur-pain on a heel spur causes the most pain because the nerves have not had time to adapt to the demands that you are making of your body. It carry’s the arch of your foot. Usually, the fascia is flexible and physically powerful.

Whenever pressure is applied on the foot, the pain soars. However, it tends to diminish after walking for some time. In certain cases, the pain remains non-existent for the entire day and comes back next morning. The excruciating pain caused by this medical condition can even exceed from heels to knees, legs or even hips. Soreness near the heel, redness, bruising, swelling, corns and calluses are some other heel spurs symptoms which show up if the condition is not attended to for a long period of time.

In order to ensure that you get timely heel spur treatment it is important not to ignore the symptoms. Most of the people are unaware of the fact that they are having heel spur as they tend to disregard the pain or assume it to be occurring because of walking for long hours. One should never underestimate even the slightest of pains as a medical condition tends to get worse if left untreated or ignored. This medical condition can be treated in a number of ways. However, you shouldn’t do anything without consulting your doctor.

Heel Spur Relief without Surgery

Do you wake up with sore feet? Do you find it extremely painful to walk after taking a long rest? Do you experience intense constant heel pain? If your answer to these questions is in affirmative, then probably you are suffering from heel spurHeel spur, also known as calcaneal spur, is the formation of a bony outgrowth that lays pressure on the plantar fascia leading to its inflammation. This inflammation is the cause of excruciating pain in the heel.

In chronic cases of heel spur, doctors suggest surgery. However, any people wish to avoid going under the knife. If you, too, are suffering from heel spur and are looking for heel spur relief without surgery, then you have come to the right place! This article will discuss various useful measures that will help you provide heel spur relief.

Some of the methods that will provide you heel spur relief include: doing stretching exercises that are meant to relax your feet muscles, daily. These exercises will remove the pressure from plantar fascia, thereby providing relief from the pain. Wear those shoes that have cushioned soles. Such soles provide support to your heel and, thus, reduce the pain. You must also ensure that the anomalies in your walking must also be rectified. To ensure this, wear foot orthotics like nightsplint and shoe inserts.

You can even do ice massage of your heel twice a day.  It is highly effective in reducing the inflammation. Also, ensure that you do not perform any strenuous activity that will lead to more pressure on your feet, such as running, walking while carrying heavy objects, climbing up and down the stairs, etc. Take proper rest as it will make certain that your heel spur symptoms do not aggravate.
In case you are unable to attain relief from any of these methods, consult your doctor. Except for surgery, there are two other methods that can help provide you relief from chronic heel spurs. These two measures are NSAIDs and ESWT. Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as prescribed by the doctor, helps in controlling the inflammation, thereby providing relief from intense heel pain. The second method, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), is a new procedure for treating heel spur. In this method, the affected area is exposed to focused high or low energy shock waves that induce micro trauma at the site to initiate body’s natural healing mechanism. Though ESWT is a new method but it has been found to be highly effective.

ESWT: The Latest Heel Spur Treatment

Heel spur is a very common medical condition amongst men and women in their middle age. Heel spur is caused due a hook of bone being formed on the heel bone. It is characterized by intense heel pain. The heel pain does not occur due to the formation of the hook of bone. In fact, the pain occurs when this outgrowth presses against the ligament that is attached to the heel bone. The intensity of the pain is such that it can immobilize you.

There are a number of effective heel spur treatments that can be implemented by the doctor. However, which treatment will suit you the best depends on the condition of your heel spur. If the heel spur has been diagnosed in its earlier stages, it can then be treated with some simple measures such as applying ice packs, using shoe inserts and night splints and by performing exercises that relax the muscles and nerves of your feet.

Heel pain and tender heels is usually the result of a biomechanical irregularity which places too much pressure on the heel bone and the yielding tissues that attach to it. Heel pain may also effect from injury, or a contusion incurred while walking, running, or jumping on hard surfaces; wearing weakly constructed footwear; or being heavy.

To control the inflammation, doctors prescribe certain non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs. In adverse cases, surgery is recommended. However, in the last decade a new treatment has emerged which is highly effective in treating chronic heel spurs. This latest heel spur treatment is extracorporeal shock wave therapy.

Electro Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWT) is the most general non-invasive surgical option. A focused force wave is directed at the precious area. The power wave disrupts the fascia tissue without requiring a surgical slit. If the ESWT machine can create enough power, there may only need to be one heel spur treatment.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy has been approved by FDA, in the year 2000, as a successful treatment for severe heel spur. In this therapy, the heel is exposed to focused shock waves, either of high or low energy form. These shock waves tend to induce micro trauma on the affected site which eventually initiates the body’s healing mechanism. When the healing response is initiated by the body, blood vessels are formed which increase the delivery of vital nutrients to the affected part.

Both low energy and high energy waves are equally effective. The treatment is less painful if one opts for low energy shock waves; however, it takes series of three or more treatments. On the other hand, only one session is required if you opt for high energy waves but it is quite painful and general anesthesia is administered to the patient.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is an excellent heel spur treatment found to be effective on those patients who have found no relief with traditional measures. However, this treatment is quite expensive. But, if you want to avoid surgery, ESWT is the most effective treatment you can get for your heel spurs relief.

Effective Heel Spur Relief

The calcified outgrowth on the heel bone is known as heel spur. It leads to intense heel pain that can make it difficult for you to perform your daily tasks. This outgrowth of bone tends to lay pressure on the ligament attached to the heel bone, which causes its inflammation. This inflammation is the cause behind the heel pain. If left unattended, heel spur can tear this ligament and cause further damage.

So, it is absolutely essential to recognize the symptoms of heel spur and consult your doctor. If heel spurs get diagnosed in early stages, it is possible to control the inflammation and use simple heel spur relief measures to reduce the heel pain. Some of the easiest heel spurs relief measures are discussed here.

One of the most effective methods to reduce heel pain  is to wear orthotics. Orthotics, such as night splints and shoe inserts, restricts the movement of your feet, thereby preventing any abnormal motion of the heel. This provides relief from the excruciating pain in the heels and prevent the condition from aggravating. One can also use silicone heel cups to treat morning heel pains. These cups provide excellent support to your heels.

Do ice massage of your sore heel. This will help in reducing the inflammation. If it fails to provide any heel  relief, you can purchase reusable hot and cold gel packs. Use these gel packs to give alternate baths to your feet. It is one of the most effective methods to control and reduce the inflammation of plantar fascia. Use stretching aids to stretch your feet in proper position that will help relieve the pain. You can also perform stretching exercises that will help in lifting the pressure from the inflamed ligament, thereby proving immense relief.

Doctors also recommend the use of certain non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs to control and reduce the inflammation. However, it can have certain side effects on your body’s natural mechanism. If you are suffering from chronic heel spur, the above mentioned methods may not work for you as effectively as for others.

For acute cases, doctors recommend surgery. But, surgery has not proven to be much effective and it also poses risk for potential complex side effects. However, a new heel spur relief procedure, known as extra corporeal shock wave therapy, has been recognized. Though it does not have any side effects and is highly effective, it is a really expensive procedure.

Are You Showing Heel Spurring Symptoms?

Heel spurs, caused by an excessive bony growth on the heel, can lead to a condition called plantar fasciitis. In this condition, the ligament attached to the foot, known as plantar fascia, gets pulled away from the heel bone.  It can cause unbearable heel pain. However, one must remember that heel spurs, also called calcaneal spurs, and plantar fasciitis are two different medical conditions, though related to each other.  Around 70% of the patients suffering from plantar fasciitis report to have calcaneal spurs, however, 50% of the people having calcaneal spur do not have plantar fasciitis.

Since these two medical conditions are closely related and both of them cause heel pain, it is very essential to correctly diagnose the right problem. Calcaneal spurs can be diagnosed with the help of X-Rays. There are some evident heel spur symptoms that can also be helpful in determining if the person is suffering from spurs.

The most prominent heel spur symptom is excruciating pain in the heel. Patients have reported that they experience intense pain in the heel when they take the first few steps in the morning. Some even wake up with tender feet. The pain, though unbearable, recedes with more you walk. However, it persists to occur every morning. The pain is of such high intensity that it can make walking and climbing the stairs extremely difficult activity. While in worse cases it can immobilize you.

Along with the prominent and most common symptom of heel pain, there are few secondary heel spur symptoms as well that can help a person to identity this medical condition. These symptoms include corns on the feet and calluses that occur due to the use of additional padding to support the heel. Some patients have revealed that they experience redness, inflammation and bruises as well. If you are showing any of these symptoms, it will be better to consult your doctor as soon as possible. Such medical conditions often get ignored and when they are heeded to, it is too late.

Heel spurs can be treated medically. Surgeries, and use of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are common procedures to treat this medical condition. However, there are other methods as well that can provide you at least some relief. These procedures include: performing exercises and stretches designed to relax the tissues around the heel bone, using shoe inserts and night splints and applying ice packs on your heel.

How to Recognize Heel Spur Symptoms?

Do you suffer from excruciating pain in your heel? Do you wake up in the morning with sore feet? Do you doubt that your pain is a heel spur symptom? If your answer to these questions is in affirmative, then read on! This article will provide you with information on how to recognize the heel spur symptoms, also known as calcaneal spur in medical terms.

Intense pain in heels can be a very agonizing experience. Your feet bear the total weight of your body and if they tend to ache badly you will either find it difficult to do activities like walking, climbing stair, standing for long time, lifting heavy objects or you will be immobilized. There are a number of medical conditions, such as nerve damage, stress fracture, tarsal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, calcaneal spur etc. that can lead to extreme pain in the heels. Most of these conditions are interrelated and, hence, it becomes difficult to diagnose the actual problem. The friction leads to irritation or swelling.

Cancaneal spur is a common medical condition prevalent in people who are in their middle age. It is a hook of bone that is formed on the calcaneus, heel bone. Like any of the above mentioned medical conditions, it is also characterized by intense pain in the heel. It is the most frequent heel spur symptom reported by the patients. According to a survey, majority of the people suffering from calcaneal spur reported to have unbearable pain in their heels while taking the first few steps in the morning. The pain tends to decrease as you walk more and eventually it recedes to a dull ache.

The calcaneal spur cannot be always painful. When painful is sharp, stab pain under or on the inside of the heel. The pain is classically relieved during rest, but is worse after receiving up again. The pain is completing poorer by walking on a hard outside or carrying incredible heavy, such as a suitcase. The pain can develop so harsh that it becomes difficult to carry on your daily work.

To recognize whether the pain in the heel is the symptom of calcaneal spur or not is important. In calcaneal spur, the pain is accompanied by redness and bruises. In some of the cases, patients have reported corns and calluses as symptoms of heel spur, along with the pain in the heels. The pain caused by calcaneal spur is like something sharp being stabbed into your heel. Though the pain reduces with continuous walking, if you take a break in between and sit down, the next time you stand or walk the pain soars again.

Because the most essential aspect in calcaneal spur treatment is rest, doctors usually counsel patients to take plenty amount of rest. Calcaneal spur can be diagnosed and treated easily. But at first, it is important for you to recognize the symptom and consult your doctor. Do not follow any treatment procedure without the knowledge of your physician.
